About the position

The Network Development Engineer role at Amazon Data Services, Inc. focuses on utilizing network and Unix systems engineering to enhance the stability and sustainability of next-generation IP networks. This position is integral to the AWS Infrastructure Services team, which is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure. The role involves collaborating with various engineering teams to implement network configurations, standards, and tools, ensuring efficient deployment and maintenance of networking software tools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal/external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.
  • Create and implement changes on the network.
  • Work closely with automation teams in defining the tools that allow scaling at higher volume.
  • Lead network projects in network sustaining engineering, deployment/implementation, scaling, technology refresh, best practices application, and optimization.
  • Sustain AWS' next generation networks by providing critical support to diagnose, mitigate impact, and resolve large-scale networking events.
  • Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configurations issues.
  • Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border.
  • Partner with the broader Network/Infrastructure organization on network engineering, configurations standards, and tools.
  • Collaborate with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams for fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products.
  • Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure compliance to those standards and policies.
  • Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.
  • Create and review documentation regarding network implementation/deployments, recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, and knowledge transfer material.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience.
  • 4+ years experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP network and/or networking systems.
  • 4+ years experience in a technical on-call capacity, responding to customer impacting events, mitigating and root cause analysis of those events.
  • 1+ years of experience in automation via Bash/shell scripting and Perl/Python programming.

Nice-to-haves

  • Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, Server Load Balancing, and Network Security architecture and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, Server Load Balancers, Firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS.
  • Experience with router, server load balancer, and firewall vendor platforms: Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Arista, Brocade, Extreme, Citrix, F5, Fortinet, Palo Alto.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with networking and/or systems technologies.
  • Knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures.
  • Possess Scripting skills or have desire to learn them; specifically Python, Perl, or Shell (bash, ksh, csh).
