About the position

The University of Vermont Health Network is seeking a highly skilled Network Engineer to join our team in South Burlington, Vermont. This position requires the applicant to work onsite and is not a remote opportunity. The role involves providing support coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with daytime hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and potential on-call coverage as needed. As a Network Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining complex network architectures that meet the organization's current and future requirements. You will work independently and receive minimal guidance while acting as a resource for colleagues with less experience. In this position, you will be responsible for planning network upgrades and expansions, ensuring scalability and security, and deploying and configuring network hardware and software components, including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers. You will also implement and maintain security measures to safeguard the network from threats, continuously monitor network performance, and identify and resolve network issues in a timely manner. Your expertise will be essential in analyzing network traffic patterns and usage to predict future capacity requirements and recommending upgrades and optimizations to support growing network demands. Additionally, you will create and maintain comprehensive network documentation, develop and implement automation scripts and tools to streamline network tasks, and provide guidance and mentorship to junior network engineers. Collaboration with cross-functional teams on network-related projects will be a key aspect of your role, as well as managing vendor relationships and ensuring compliance with industry standards and organizational policies. Responsibilities

  • Develop and design complex network architectures to meet the organization's current and future requirements.
  • Plan network upgrades and expansions while considering scalability and security.
  • Deploy and configure network hardware and software components, including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers.
  • Ensure proper integration of new network technologies and services.
  • Implement and maintain security measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and access control lists, to safeguard the network from threats.
  • Continuously monitor network performance, availability, and traffic patterns.
  • Identify and resolve network issues, including downtime and connectivity problems, in a timely manner.
  • Analyze network traffic patterns and usage to predict future capacity requirements.
  • Recommend upgrades and optimizations to support growing network demands.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and inventory records.
  • Develop and implement automation scripts and tools to streamline network provisioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior network engineers.
  • Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams on network-related projects.
  • Evaluate and select network hardware and software vendors.
  • Manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and oversee procurement processes.
  • Ensure that the network infrastructure complies with industry standards and organizational policies.
  • Develop and enforce network-related policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or formal technical training or equivalent experience.
  • 5 or more years' experience in networking and IT support.
  • In-depth knowledge of networking protocols, including TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and VLANs.
  • Proficiency in emerging technologies like SD-WAN, SDN, and network virtualization.
  • Strong understanding of network security principles, including firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and network segmentation.
  • Mastery of router and switch configurations, including Cisco, Juniper, or other leading vendors.
  • Expertise in designing and optimizing routing tables and switching fabrics for high performance and redundancy.
  • Proficiency with network monitoring tools such as Wireshark, Nagios, or SolarWinds.
  • Ability to troubleshoot network issues and implement proactive monitoring solutions.
  • Knowledge of cloud networking services and configurations in platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Skill in connecting on-premises networks to cloud environments securely.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, Perl, or Ansible for automating network tasks.
  • Experience with network automation frameworks like Puppet or Chef.
  • Understanding of load balancing concepts and technologies.
  • Familiarity with content delivery networks (CDNs) for optimizing content delivery and performance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve network issues efficiently.
  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and clients.
  • Leadership abilities to mentor junior engineers, lead projects, and make strategic decisions.
