About the position

Networkmaine, a unit of the University of Maine System, is seeking applications for a Network Engineer I. This full-time, regular position is part of a team that supports all voice, video, and data communication services for the University of Maine System (UMS), the Maine School and Library Network (MSLN), and Maine's Research and Education Network (MaineREN). The responsibilities include designing, installing, maintaining, and configuring voice, video, and data equipment and software and researching and conducting assigned projects involving emerging technologies. The incumbent will need to perform these functions independently under general direction with a certain degree of creativity and latitude. The role requires a solid understanding of carrier and/or enterprise-level network architectures and hardware, as well as knowledge of and experience with the operation of data networks and associated transports/protocols. The successful candidate will also need to understand voice and video technologies transmitted over data networks, including protocols and standards. Experience with various operating systems such as Windows, Mac, and Linux is essential, along with a fundamental understanding of network security. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are crucial for this position, as the engineer will be tasked with troubleshooting and resolving network issues as they arise. The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the expectation of evenings and weekends as needed. The salary for this position ranges from $60,000 to $65,000, commensurate with training, education, and experience, and will take into consideration the salary of current UMS employees for transfer or promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Design, install, maintain, and configure voice, video, and data equipment and software.
  • Research and conduct assigned projects involving emerging technologies.
  • Support all voice, video, and data communication services for the University of Maine System, MSLN, and MaineREN.
  • Perform functions independently under general direction with creativity and latitude.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or three to five years of technical education and/or experience with data networking and communications.
  • Understanding of carrier and/or enterprise-level network architectures and hardware.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the operation of data networks and associated transports/protocols.
  • Understanding of voice and video technologies transmitted over data networks including protocols and standards.
  • Experience with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
  • Fundamental understanding of network security.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs.
