About the position

The Network Engineer II at Westchester Community College is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and support of network equipment, as well as the installation of all network equipment software. This role involves project planning and addressing systems integration issues, managing and configuring enterprise-level tools. The engineer will receive user calls regarding network-related problems and take appropriate actions to resolve these issues. Additionally, the position entails working on specialized and complex assignments related to the installation and relocation of hardware and software for network equipment. The Network Engineer II will administer, configure, and manage tools and applications that operate on an enterprise level. This includes diagnosing failures to determine whether they are caused by network software or hardware and notifying the appropriate IT staff. The engineer will also modify, update, and replace internal equipment parts as required, and assist in preparing network documentation, specifications, standards, instructions, and user manuals as needed. Furthermore, the role includes assisting with the development and implementation of security standards and protocols to ensure that systems are accessible only by authorized users. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the installation, maintenance/support, and relocation of network equipment.

  • Performs diagnosis of failures to determine whether they are induced by network software or hardware and notifies appropriate information technology staff.
  • Modifies, updates, and replaces internal equipment parts, as required.
  • Assists with the preparation of network document specifications, standards, instructions, and user manuals, as needed.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of security standards and protocols to ensure systems are accessible only by authorized users.

Requirements

  • A high school or equivalency diploma and a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience where a primary function of the position was the installation, operation, maintenance and problem diagnosis of network equipment including routers and switches.
  • Current CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) certification and three years of experience where a primary function of the position was the installation, operation, maintenance and problem diagnosis of network equipment including routers and switches.
  • Eight (8) years of experience where a primary function of the position was the installation, operation, maintenance and problem diagnosis of network equipment including routers and switches.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in some or all of the following: Dell Servers/PCs, Kemp Load Balancers, Dell/EMC/TrueNAS Storage, Alcatel Switches, Routers, Network Access Control Devices, Aruba Access Points, cables, and various testing & networking tools & peripherals (soft/hardware based).
  • Experience with Microsoft (Office 365, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, LDAP), VMware, SSL Certificates, Alert Logic, Nexpose, Ubuntu, and Windows Server 2016/2019/2022.
