About the position

The Network Engineer II at Johns Hopkins University is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining network backbone infrastructures to support the Johns Hopkins Police Department and Public Safety. This role involves troubleshooting, monitoring, and ensuring the functionality of network components across campus and enterprise-wide systems. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to deliver network solutions and manage changes in network topology, while also mentoring junior staff and providing consultation to IT users.

Responsibilities

  • Plan medium sized technical projects from inception to completion using standard project planning tools.
  • Responsible for JHPD network planning, architecture design, and engineering, reviewing work of junior staff.
  • Develop project planning documents using established departmental guidelines.
  • Formally present ideas, designs, plans, and solutions using standard presentation tools.
  • Install and configure networks from inception to completion following standard project plans.
  • Install and configure medium size networks, including connections to remote sites in a WAN.
  • Adhere to change management policies and procedures for projects, communicating risks and significance.
  • Install, configure, and interpret results of network analyzers to manage performance and resolve issues.
  • Solve JHPD campus wide technical problems using troubleshooting tools and experience.
  • Analyze moderately complex problems following standard practices to provide solutions.
  • Maintain medium size route and switched networks, ensuring stable connections to AT&T FirstNet.
  • Coordinate and solve JHPD network issues escalated from tier-1 and tier-2 personnel.
  • Troubleshoot medium size route and switched networks, verifying connections to remote sites in a WAN.
  • Analyze and determine root causes of problems by reviewing hardware and software interactions.
  • Interface positively with a broad customer base with varying technical competencies.
  • Work with JHPD, consultants, and vendors on advanced networking technologies.
  • Collaborate with other School police departments IT for best practices.
  • Mentor junior staff such as Network Engineer I, Analysts, or Network Technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of related experience.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities effectively and prioritize conflicting demands.
  • Demonstrated track record of executing assigned project tasks within established schedules.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills in service of users and colleagues.
  • Sound documentation skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Exemplary customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of the OSI network model, Ethernet, and TCP/IP networking.
  • Experience in implementing and administrating common TCP/IP-based services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Detailed knowledge of Arista networking systems and Cloud Vision Portal.
  • Detailed knowledge of Cisco networking systems.
  • Arista Networks certification or CCDP certification.
  • Experience with police departments or law enforcement agency networks.
  • CCNP or CCDP certification.
