About the position

The Network Engineer III position at the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) involves working under the direct supervision of higher-level Network Engineers to assist in the installation and support of network communications, specifically focusing on LAN/WAN systems. This role is critical in ensuring the smooth operation of network infrastructure within a healthcare setting, which is vital for maintaining high-quality patient care and operational efficiency. The Network Engineer III will follow standard practices and procedures to analyze situations involving readily identifiable problems, contributing to the planning of large-scale systems projects through vendor comparisons and cost studies. In this role, the engineer will perform routine network maintenance, which includes software upgrades and patching of network systems. They will be responsible for patching network jacks and ensuring that all connections are secure and functional. Troubleshooting and resolving network issues in a timely manner is a key responsibility, as is working closely with staff to address and resolve any network-related concerns. The engineer will monitor network performance and make recommendations for improvements, ensuring that all network equipment and configurations comply with company policies and industry standards. Documentation of network configurations, changes, and procedures is also a critical aspect of this position, as is assisting in the implementation of new network solutions and improvements. The position requires the ability to lift up to 75 lbs, indicating that some physical demands are associated with the role, particularly in handling network equipment and installations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine network maintenance, including software upgrades and patching.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in IT related field required.
  • Valid CCNA Certification Required.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to use judgment in interpreting work directions for appropriateness to specific tasks or problems.
  • Effective organization skills.
  • Proficient in analysis and problem solving, ability to assess customer needs and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to systems security and control procedures in accordance with departmental, vendor standards and regulatory bodies.
  • Proficiency with Cisco infrastructure and equipment.
  • Strong understanding of network protocols and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work 100% onsite in a healthcare/hospital environment.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively work with staff and other IT professionals.
  • Experience with Route and Switch.
  • Experience Performing Packet Captures and Troubleshooting Issues.
