About the position

Fort Bend County is seeking a highly skilled individual responsible for the design, deployment, maintenance, and administration of complex network systems and applications that support local and wide area networks. This role is crucial in ensuring the functionality of all county data systems, web, and voice technology. The successful candidate will be a key resource in implementing and integrating new network-based technology, participating actively in the planning of programs, policies, or objectives for their work group and department. The position requires participation in the design of Fort Bend County's local, wide area, and wireless hardware and software network infrastructure, supporting both data and voice over IP traffic. Responsibilities include overseeing network installations, maintaining, proactively monitoring, and documenting all county networks, VLANs, and routing configurations using advanced Cisco equipment, network operating systems, and networking protocols. The role also involves performing advanced diagnostics, identifying, analyzing, and initiating resolutions as third-level support for all LAN/WAN connectivity devices, both local and remote. Additionally, the candidate will recommend and implement LAN/WAN policies and standards to ensure adherence to approved security and disaster recovery procedures. They will work with outside vendor services to ensure that support contracts are adhered to and that services are provided efficiently and timely. The role includes administering proactive network security measures through the use of advanced Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances and other enterprise-level equipment as appropriate. The candidate will also research and recommend technology to support long-range network capacity planning, assisting IT management in planning for future needs in hardware, software, and service acquisition to maintain acceptable service levels for customers. The position requires being on call 24/7 to respond to network-related problems and outages and participating in emergency management activities during local disasters as directed by county managers.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the design of Fort Bend County's local, wide area, and wireless hardware and software network infrastructure, supporting both data and voice over IP traffic.
  • Perform or oversee network installations.
  • Maintain, proactively monitor, and document all county networks, VLANs, and routing configurations using advanced Cisco equipment, network operating systems, and networking protocols.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics, identify, analyze, and initiate resolutions as third-level support for all LAN/WAN connectivity devices.
  • Recommend and implement LAN/WAN policies and standards to ensure adherence to approved security and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Work with outside vendor services to ensure that support contracts are adhered to and services are provided efficiently and timely.
  • Administer proactive network security measures through the use of advanced Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances and other advanced enterprise-level equipment as appropriate.
  • Research and recommend technology in support of long-range network capacity planning to assist IT management in planning for future needs in hardware, software, and service acquisition.
  • Be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to respond to network-related problems and outages.
  • Participate in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED; Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field (High School/GED and four years of relevant professional experience may be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree).
  • 5 years of hands-on experience configuring and managing Cisco switches, routers, and firewalls.
  • Advanced network knowledge of Cisco technology, protocols, and security systems in a converged network environment encompassing local, wide area, wireless, and VoIP applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, vendors, other employees, and elected officials.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA) preferred.
