About the position

Voyatek, formerly GCOM Software and OnCore Consulting, is seeking a Junior Network Engineer to join our growing team in Baltimore, MD. This position is integral to our mission of delivering outcome-driven technology solutions to public sector agencies and higher education institutions nationwide. As a Junior Network Engineer, you will work closely with MDOT SHA network technicians and IT liaisons to support the MDOT SHA infrastructure and end-user needs. Your role will involve daily management of servers, user account creation, and access rights management, ensuring that our network operates smoothly and efficiently. In this position, you will also participate in an on-call rotation, which requires you to be available 24/7 for one week every six weeks. During business hours, you will be responsible for answering on-call phone calls and responding to emails promptly. After hours, you are expected to respond to phone calls immediately and emails by the next morning if necessary. You will attend staff meetings and document knowledge bases, creating and maintaining documentation for the Office of Information Technology (OIT). Your analytical skills will be crucial as you evaluate system problems related to workflow and organization, developing appropriate corrective actions as needed. Additionally, you will participate in the planning and execution of infrastructure development, including patching, expansion, and enhancement of our systems. Training sessions and team meetings will also be part of your responsibilities, ensuring that you are well-integrated into the team and up-to-date with the latest developments in our technology and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the network staff with daily management of servers.
  • Create and manage user accounts, access to files, and rights to groups.
  • Participate in on-call duties as part of the on-call rotation, which is one week every six weeks and is a 24-hour day.
  • Answer the on-call phone and respond to on-call emails during business hours.
  • Respond to after-hours phone calls immediately and emails by the next morning if necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings and other required meetings.
  • Document knowledge base and maintain documentation for the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
  • Analyze information requirements and evaluate system problems of workflow, organization, and planning.
  • Develop appropriate corrective actions for identified issues.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of infrastructure development, including patching, expansion, and enhancement.
  • Participate in training sessions and team meetings as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other related scientific or technical discipline, or three (3) years of equivalent experience in a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in a network and IT system environment, including protocols (TCP/IP), equipment, and services (DNS).
  • Prior experience with Microsoft Windows server family, including Windows Server 2008, 2012, and 2016, Microsoft file and print services, Windows terminal server, server security, group policy, and Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Experience with Microsoft Exchange online and Microsoft Outlook client technologies, including Office 365.
  • Experience with Storage Area Network (SAN) and switch architecture, including working with volumes/partitions, disk sets, arrays, RAID storage pools, and hardware.
  • Experience with virtualization technology, including use of product suites from VMWare.
  • Experience monitoring server performance and utilizing associated tools, managing block-level backup and associated backup/recovery methods.
  • Experience creating, updating, and maintaining network and IT system policies, procedures, and related documentation.
  • Experience mounting, moving, and occasionally configuring network equipment.
