About the position

The Network Engineer position at Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) is a critical role responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the overall network infrastructure, including internet connections, associated equipment, and servers. This position is essential for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the network systems that support the educational environment. The Network Engineer will work under the supervision of the Coordinator of Information Technology and will be involved in various technical tasks that require a high level of expertise in network architecture and management. The primary responsibilities include providing engineering and support for complex network architectures, designing, configuring, installing, and maintaining local, wide area, and wireless network infrastructures across all school buildings. The Network Engineer will also provide technical support to IT department staff, troubleshoot network-related technology issues, and support enterprise network applications such as the student information system, Active Directory, electronic mail, and security systems like firewalls and intrusion detection systems. In addition to these duties, the Network Engineer will coordinate with vendors for the installation and maintenance of systems, perform system maintenance and upgrades, and maintain backup systems for critical applications. The role also involves documenting the network in accordance with IT guidelines, responding to service requests, and researching new technologies to enhance the MCPS network infrastructure. The position requires the ability to work under pressure, make independent decisions in emergencies, and effectively communicate with division employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot the overall network infrastructure and internet connection.
  • Provide engineering and support for complex network architectures.
  • Design, configure, install, and maintain local, wide area, and wireless network infrastructures at all buildings.
  • Provide technical support to Information Technology department staff members.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues relating to the network infrastructure.
  • Support enterprise network applications such as the student information system, Active Directory, electronic mail, virus protection, firewall, and intrusion detection system.
  • Coordinate with vendors for installation, maintenance, repair, and removal of systems and services as necessary.
  • Perform system maintenance and operating system/firmware upgrades.
  • Maintain backup systems for critical enterprise applications hosted by MCPS; monitor offsite applications for backup services.
  • Install, configure, and maintain equipment in the data center and distribution frames.
  • Perform basic project management tasks for division technology projects.
  • Document the network in accordance with Information Technology guidelines.
  • Respond to service requests and provide customer support in-person and/or remotely via telephone, email, or other communication methods.
  • Research new technologies and make recommendations for their inclusion within the MCPS network infrastructure.
  • Assist in establishing standards for data communications networks.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsible experience in network and data communications.
  • Expert knowledge of local, wide area, and wireless TCP/IP network architectures.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard network protocols.
  • Working knowledge of computer programming and virtualization technologies.
  • Knowledge of Windows workstation and server technologies (primary), and Macintosh, Linux (secondary) platforms.
  • Interpersonal skills for working effectively with division employees.
  • Ability to incorporate advanced network management technologies to improve efficiency.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to learn related materials through oral instruction, observation, structured lecture, and reading.
  • Ability to work under pressure, such as handling significant, simultaneous, unexpected issues.
  • Ability to provide accurate and detailed information and comprehend and write technical reports and manuals.
  • Ability to establish priority of own workload and work flexible hours as required.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle license with a good driving record.
