About the position

The Network Engineer position at The Computer Merchant involves working within the Network Services department of Information Technology Services, which is responsible for managing the entire network infrastructure of the University. This includes overseeing switches, routers, VPNs, wireless devices, firewalls, and data centers, as well as ensuring interconnections between the University's campuses, disaster recovery sites, the internet, Internet2, and various cloud applications and services. The network infrastructure is critical for supporting the academic, research, and business functions of the University, making this role essential to the institution's operations. As a Network Systems Engineer, the individual will analyze networking needs, recommend solutions, design, implement, maintain, and support both the local area network (LAN) and the wide area network (WAN). The role requires the ability to work independently while managing multiple demands and prioritizing tasks in a dynamic environment. Collaboration with systems and ITS security teams is crucial, as the engineer will provide technical expertise in the engineering, installation, monitoring, and maintenance of the network to support the University's business needs and academic mission. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills, both oral and written, along with a customer service-oriented mindset. A proactive attitude is essential, as the engineer will need to react quickly in emergency situations and work effectively with minimal supervision. The ability to juggle multiple projects, diagnose problems, and conduct root cause analysis is vital. Additionally, the engineer will be expected to document work performed, follow up with customers, and gather information to complete requests. Flexibility and a willingness to learn new technologies are also important, as off-hours support may be required to meet project deadlines and troubleshoot issues.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze networking needs and recommend solutions.
  • Design, implement, maintain, and support the University's LAN and WAN.
  • Collaborate with systems and ITS security teams to provide technical expertise.
  • Document work performed and follow up with customers.
  • Work with other engineers and vendors to complete complex projects.
  • Diagnose problems and conduct root cause analysis.
  • Provide off-hours support as needed for troubleshooting and project deadlines.

Requirements

  • Expertise with all IP network technologies including IPV4, OSPF, BGP, protocol analysis, VPNs, Firewalls, SNMPv3, netflow, and monitoring tools.
  • Experience with Cisco (nexus/ASR/ASA/Firepower), Fortigate, Extreme Networks, and Aruba wireless network equipment.
  • Knowledge of IPV6, AWS/cloud networking, and SIP/VoIP experience is desirable.
  • Familiarity with programming/scripting is highly desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related field is a plus.
  • Minimum of 6 years relevant experience preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Cisco certifications are a plus.
  • Experience working in a Higher Education and/or a large campus/corporate network is a plus.
