About the position

The Network Engineer, WAN/Wired will play a crucial role in designing and implementing the university's wide-area network (WAN) and wired network infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity across the entire UCLA campus. This position is integral to the Infrastructure Services department, which provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services. The Network Engineer will be responsible for the engineering and operations of the network infrastructure, which includes wired/WAN, wireless, security/firewall, and the management of network cabling, routers, and firewalls. This role will also involve connecting various devices, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, to the network, managing network access, securing network access, and implementing appropriate authentication measures such as network registration systems, VPN, and NAC. In this position, the Network Engineer will ensure that UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in supporting the university's academic mission. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver exceptional information technology services consistently across faculty, staff, and students, thereby positively impacting UCLA's operations and culture. This role requires a commitment to advancing the university's mission while modeling UCLA's culture and values. The Network Engineer will also be involved in the design and application of various system and data networks, including local area networks, wide area networks, intranets, extranets, and other data communications networks. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for regular visits to campus as needed, and the anticipated pay range is between $111,749 and $127,897 annually, depending on the skills and experience of the selected finalist. Responsibilities

  • Design and implement the university's wide-area network (WAN) and wired network infrastructure.
  • Manage the engineering and operations of the network infrastructure, including wired/WAN, wireless, and security/firewall.
  • Connect devices, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, to the network.
  • Manage network access and secure access to networks through appropriate authentication methods.
  • Ensure the IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission.
  • Deliver exceptional information technology services across faculty, staff, and students.
  • Participate in the design and application of various system and data networks, such as local area networks and wide area networks.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in network services, information technology, or network operations, or a related field.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale, complex network environments, preferably in an academic or research setting.
  • Experience with network equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Strong knowledge of wide and local area network architecture, including IP routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, ISIS, and EIGRP.
  • Knowledge of network technologies such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, MPLS, SD-WAN, VPN, VLAN, and STP.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and automation tools to ensure quick resolution of issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey technical information to a diverse community.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Strong organizational skills to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to evaluate options and make decisions with integrity.
