About the position

The Network Engineer, Wired will play a crucial role in the Network Services team within Infrastructure Services to support the design, implementation, optimization, administration, and technical documentation of all wired network infrastructure. This position is essential for ensuring the reliability, availability, and scalability of all wired network solutions at UCSF. The Network Engineer will participate in resolving complex technical issues in a timely manner while delivering best-in-class wired service support across the university. This role involves conducting day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wired network infrastructure to ensure that systems operate at peak efficiency with minimal downtime. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Network Engineer, Wired will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring that the IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of UCSF's academic mission. This team member will advance UCSF's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. The role requires executing the University's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy, and placement within the salary range is dependent on various factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and optimize wired network infrastructure.
  • Administer and document all wired network systems and services.
  • Ensure reliability, availability, and scalability of wired network solutions.
  • Resolve complex technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Conduct day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wired networks.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to maintain peak efficiency.
  • Provide technical support to end-users and other employees, particularly in medical and health research.
  • Manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues.
  • Oversee software and hardware updates, data storage, and disaster recovery processes.
  • Implement network protocols and ensure compliance with technical standards.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems.
  • In-depth understanding of various network hardware platforms and protocols, including OSI layer 2 and 3.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex communication hardware and software systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with network management systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to independently resolve issues using defined parameters.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
