About the position

The Network Engineer, Wireless/Radio will be responsible for building and maintaining the university's wireless network and radio systems. This role involves providing network engineering and technical support to ensure the wireless network infrastructure operates efficiently with minimal downtime. The engineer will design, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain network equipment across various platforms, aligning activities with industry best practices and university policies. This position plays a crucial role in supporting UCLA's academic mission by ensuring a secure and effective IT infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the university's wireless network and radio systems.
  • Provide network engineering and technical support for the wireless network infrastructure.
  • Design, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain university network equipment across multiple platforms.
  • Ensure networking activities align with industry best practices and university policies.
  • Positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring IT infrastructure is operable and secure.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in network services, information technology, or network operations.
  • Experience in information technology, network engineering, or wireless networks.
  • Experience troubleshooting wireless networks, including client experience testing and wireless packet analysis.
  • Experience with 802.11 standards, RF design and implementation, and managing radio systems.
  • Experience designing controller clustering, failover methods, and AP modes of operation.
  • Experience with wireless optimizations, including AP placement and channel tuning.
  • Working knowledge of various radio equipment types and communication systems.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols, and monitoring tools for issue resolution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and integrity in decision-making.
  • Commitment to advancing an inclusive environment valuing equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five or more years of experience in network services or related fields.
