About the position

The position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) focuses on enhancing national security through advanced research and technology. The role involves working in a dynamic operational environment to monitor and manage computer networks and cybersecurity infrastructure, contributing to the design and development of systems that protect against various threats. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor junior staff, and engage in continuous improvement practices to ensure effective project delivery and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Working in an operational/production environment; knowledge of monitoring, management, capacity planning and compaction strategy.
  • Possess good communication skills; coordinating project expectations between the various project stakeholders (PMs, analysts, developers, and other outside interests).
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them effectively in an evolving environment.
  • Able to work with minimal direct oversight; effectively organize and coordinate work assignments to meet established timetables.
  • Established system administrator with an eye towards innovative systems engineering.
  • Working network knowledge (basic packet structure, protocols, etc).
  • Contributing to the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments.
  • Applies engineering and technical principles to the design and development of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems.
  • Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases.
  • Plans and conducts projects after analysis of functional and operational requirements. May consult with and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Domains: Desktop and Computing, High Performance Computing, Cloud Integration, etc.
  • External Influence: Publishing (e.g. peer-reviewed outlets, books, chapters, etc.), standards bodies, professional society leadership, teaching in accredited programs, major contributor to open source and/or filed patents/IP.
  • Established local reputation with specialization in at least one S&E domain.
  • Making key contributions in setting technical direction.
  • Develops and optimizes capabilities at the division level along with developing external reputation.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA or higher and 3 years of relevant experience -OR- PhD and 1 year of relevant experience -OR- AA and 14 years of relevant experience -OR- HS/GED and 16 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience applying theoretical/fundamental computer science concepts through the design, development, configuration, implementation, and maintenance of computer infrastructure and networks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge or experience with BGP and OSPF networking protocols
  • Knowledge or experience with WAN and LAN connectivity (routers and switches)
  • Knowledge or experience with Microsoft Visio and/or Draw.io for network diagram documentation
  • Knowledge or experience with Cisco ISE for authentication and authorization
  • Knowledge or experience with Cisco AnyConnect and IPSEC VPN
  • Experience with defense-in-depth cybersecurity implementations for air-gapped closed loop networks (DISA STIGS/Vulnerability Management/Encryption)
  • Knowledge or experience working with Tenable/ACAS for compliance tracking
  • Active DoD TS and/or DOE Q Security Clearance
