About the position

The Network Engineer position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) focuses on enhancing national security through advanced computer networks and cybersecurity infrastructure. Responsibilities

  • Work in an operational/production environment, focusing on monitoring, management, capacity planning, and compaction strategy.
  • Coordinate project expectations among various stakeholders including project managers, analysts, and developers.
  • Quickly understand and effectively apply new concepts in an evolving environment.
  • Organize and coordinate work assignments to meet established timetables with minimal oversight.
  • Serve as an established system administrator with a focus on innovative systems engineering.
  • Apply engineering and technical principles to design and develop computer networks and cybersecurity infrastructure.
  • Analyze, install, integrate, modify, and support systems, networks, software, and databases.
  • Plan and conduct projects based on functional and operational requirements, potentially leading cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and operational assignments.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience, or MS/MA and 3 years of relevant experience, or PhD and 1 year of relevant experience, or AA and 14 years of relevant experience, or HS/GED and 16 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience applying theoretical/fundamental computer science concepts in the design, development, configuration, implementation, and maintenance of computer infrastructure and networks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge or experience with BGP and OSPF networking protocols.
  • Knowledge or experience with WAN and LAN connectivity (routers and switches).
  • Knowledge or experience with Microsoft Visio and/or Draw.io for network diagram documentation.
  • Knowledge or experience with Cisco ISE for authentication and authorization.
  • Knowledge or experience with Cisco AnyConnect and IPSEC VPN.
  • Experience with defense-in-depth cybersecurity implementations for air-gapped closed loop networks.
  • Knowledge or experience working with Tenable/ACAS for compliance tracking.
  • Active DoD TS and/or DOE Q Security Clearance.
