About the position

The Network Engineer I position at the University of Alabama is responsible for supporting the functionality and availability of the university's enterprise-wide networks. This role involves performing low-complexity operational network management and maintenance tasks under close supervision, assisting with network problem identification, analysis, and resolution. The engineer will also manage the Athletics network, ensuring optimal performance of both wired and wireless infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Support the functionality and availability of enterprise-wide networks.
  • Perform low-complexity operational network management and maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with network problem identification, analysis, and resolution.
  • Manage the day-to-day coordination of the Athletics network.
  • Install and configure hardware for network operations.
  • Create and execute maintenance plans for network infrastructure.
  • Optimize overall network performance to ensure speed and resiliency.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot network problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR associate's degree and two (2) years of IT experience; OR High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of IT experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Aruba CX switching, Aruba wireless, and Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Knowledge in cabling, connectors, and cabling standards for low voltage applications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern networks including virtualization, topologies, and models.
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows Desktop Operating System Environments, OS X, and UNIX-based Operating Systems.
  • Exceptional knowledge of network protocols and their applications.
  • Security-based knowledge of best practices related to general network operations.
  • Exhaustive knowledge of hardware components from consumer-grade to enterprise line offerings.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in an applicable area(s) of responsibility.
  • Experience with SSL and Certificate Authorities.
