About the position

The Network Engineer position at Alpha Omega involves supporting the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) within NOAA by managing and maintaining the network infrastructure. This role requires a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to recommend and implement networking solutions, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the datacenter's network, primarily utilizing Juniper equipment. The engineer will collaborate closely with server administration teams and play a critical role in data management and software development activities.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, install, and maintain various network devices and services (e.g. routers, switches, firewalls, DNS, DHCP)
  • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations
  • Monitor performance and ensure system availability and reliability
  • Monitor system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning
  • Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure
  • Select and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the security team
  • Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
  • 6+ years of work experience responsible for designing, deploying, and operating computer networks (LAN/WAN)
  • JNCIS-ENT / CCNA or higher
  • In-depth understanding and practical knowledge of networking systems such as switches, firewalls, and routers
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate networks, identify issues and provide solutions to ensure networks are operating efficiently
  • Working knowledge of network protocols (TCP/UDP, DHCP, DNS, BGP) and experience with IPv4 and IPv6
  • Working knowledge of physical infrastructure design including structured cabling and fiber-optic cabling
  • Experience with fiber channel and managing brocade switches (FOS)
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and delivering against deadlines

  • Federal government experience
  • Experience implementing automation using ansible and python
  • Experience with Linux based operating systems
  • Experience with Git, Gitlab
  • Experience with rancid, Zabbix
  • Knowledge of the full software development lifecycle, with exposure to Agile or iterative approaches to delivery
  • Familiarity with programming languages, libraries and APIs
