About the position

Nightwing is seeking a solid Network Engineer to assist the Lead Network Engineer and Network Technician with daily activities in a fast-paced Data Center environment. This position is based in McLean, VA, with occasional work in the Chantilly, VA area. The ideal candidate must have hands-on network engineering experience and be a team player, ready to work every day. The role requires 3-5 years of hands-on network engineering experience in a customer environment, particularly with Cisco firewalls and Catalyst switches. Candidates should possess CCNP-level knowledge of Cisco networking, although certification is not required. Familiarity with cabling types and standards, as well as a good understanding of network link virtualization technologies, is essential. The role also involves performing layer 1 tasks as needed, such as pulling cables and racking/stacking equipment. Strong troubleshooting skills and project management experience are crucial, as is the ability to use MS Visio for producing network diagrams. The candidate must thrive in a non-enterprise, fast-paced environment and be capable of creating and presenting technical briefings as necessary. An active TS/SCI clearance with a Polygraph is required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Lead Network Engineer and Network Technician with daily activities in a Data Center environment.
  • Perform hands-on network engineering tasks, including configuration and troubleshooting of Cisco firewalls and switches.
  • Manage projects through their full lifecycle to meet deadlines.
  • Create and present network diagrams using MS Visio.
  • Conduct layer 1 tasks such as pulling cables and racking/stacking equipment as needed.
  • Provide technical briefings and presentations for Engineering Review Boards.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of hands-on network engineering experience in a customer environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco firewalls (ASA/Firepower 5510, 5515X, FP4100's).
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco Catalyst switches; Nexus switch experience is a plus.
  • CCNP-level knowledge of Cisco networking (certification not required).
  • Familiarity with cabling types and standards (Single Mode vs. Multi Mode, LC connector vs. SC connector, Cat5/6/7).
  • Good understanding of network link virtualization technologies (Ether-channel/Port-channel, Nexus virtual port-channels).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong project management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of how mission enclaves communicate with Enterprise networks.
  • Familiarity with the Enterprise ticketing system.
  • Experience with Cisco Firewall Management Center to manage Firepower firewall.
  • Experience with Cisco Nexus Ethernet switching platforms (Nexus 5500, 5600, 7700, and 9500).
  • Experience with Cisco MDS Fibre Channel switching platforms (MDS 9000).
  • Familiarity with Storage Area Networking (SAN) and Fibre Channel protocols and standards.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating system.
  • Familiarity with SolarWinds network management/monitoring tool.
  • Familiarity with JIRA.
  • Experience working in a 'mission-like' environment (outside of Enterprise comms).
  • AWS/Cloud familiarity.
