About the position

The Network Engineer position at Liberty County Schools is a critical role responsible for overseeing the design, development, testing, and implementation of a highly available communications network. The individual in this position will manage and oversee the daily operations related to voice and data networks, ensuring that the network infrastructure aligns with the goals and objectives of the Liberty County School System (LCSS). This role requires a strong technical background in information technology, with the ability to design, deploy, administer, and support a robust and complex enterprise network communications platform. The Network Engineer will work under high-pressure situations, gathering and assessing enterprise network needs, and converting abstract ideas into creative designs and solutions. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Network Engineer will supervise and instruct the Wide Area Network (WAN) operations, work with contracted vendors for network support, and oversee the email system. The role involves evaluating and assessing potential network applications and resources, determining their impact on the LCSS network, and ensuring that the network efficiently meets the requirements of teaching and learning. The Network Engineer will also be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing network failures and outages, providing high-level support to customer service and local school technical staff, and making recommendations for future capital improvements to the network. The position requires regular attendance and the ability to perform routine physical activities, including lifting and climbing ladders. The Network Engineer will be evaluated annually by the Chief Academic Officer based on the performance standards set forth by the Board's policy on classified evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of the daily operations relating to the design, development, testing, and implementation of a highly available communications network.
  • Manage and oversee the design and implementation of voice and data networks.
  • Study industry standards and best practice procedures to develop a design that integrates with LCSS goals and objectives.
  • Supervise and instruct the Wide Area Network (WAN) operations.
  • Work with contracted vendors for network support.
  • Oversee the email system.
  • Coordinate the evaluation and assessment of potential network applications and resources.
  • Assess and determine areas of potential impact regarding the implementation of new applications/resources.
  • Determine the impact of potential new applications/resources on the LCSS network.
  • Oversee the analysis, troubleshooting, and repair of network failures and outages.
  • Ensure access to network resources for students, teachers, and administrators.
  • Provide high-level support to customer service and local school technical staff.
  • Consult on network/application response issues by analyzing data traffic.
  • Oversee the monitoring, trend identification, and documentation of the health and operations of the WAN/LAN and wireless networks.
  • Monitor necessary data to predict and prevent issues/outages of the enterprise-wide network.
  • Make recommendations for future capital improvements to the LCSS network.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in related field preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in network support or related field.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Server and Active Directory.
  • Understanding of enterprise wireless solutions (Cisco preferred).
  • Dedicated training and related field certification in one or more leading network operating systems (Cisco preferred).
  • Strong technical background in information technology; ability to design, deploy, administer, and support a robust enterprise network communications platform.
  • Ability to gather and assess enterprise network needs and convert them into creative designs and solutions.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills; ability to work across departmental boundaries and negotiate solutions.
  • Knowledge of content filtering and firewall solutions (Barracuda preferred).
  • Understanding of back-up systems, mobile device management (MDM) solutions, VLANS, and configuring Cisco switches.
  • Understanding of VMware, Mac OS, iOS, Windows OS, and online email systems.
