About the position

The Network Engineer position at Ellucian is a highly technical role focused on network administration, requiring expertise in server operating systems and network configurations. The role involves designing, installing, upgrading, securing, troubleshooting, and planning network systems, with a strong emphasis on various network hardware including Aruba switches, Cisco Meraki Wireless, Fortinet Firewalls, and Mitel VoIP systems. The engineer will ensure the stability and integrity of voice, data, video, and wireless network services, providing both technical and administrative support for the university's network infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and resolves complex problems in the university LAN, WAN, & WLAN.
  • Reviews and designs the network to provide a high-level of security to protect the institution's assets and data.
  • Maintains upgrades and repairs network hardware systems, devices and interfaces using supported tools and equipment.
  • Monitors the health of the university network and the effective utilization of network address space.
  • Administers and maintains remote VPN access, applications and security for network related administration and access.
  • Documents and updates network physical layouts, logical connectivity, and device configurations.
  • Assists in the formation and implementation of security policies as it relates to the university network environment.
  • Monitors, maintains, configures, upgrades and repairs university firewalls to maintain security posture.
  • Participates in the disaster recovery planning process as it relates to the networking infrastructure.
  • Provides support for wireless network infrastructure including trouble tickets, monitoring, design, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Receives, updates, and closes support/work order tickets in software system.
  • Shares technical and functional expertise with other members of the team as required.
  • Acts as an escalation point for Help Desk team, Systems team, and Application team.
  • Documents various procedures for use by other IT staff members for business continuity.
  • Configures, installs, and maintains university VoIP system and endpoints.
  • Supports Microsoft Windows environments.
  • Maintains excellent communications with internal customers, IT resources, as well as external partners, consultants, and support teams.

Requirements

  • Strong working knowledge of firewall configuration and maintenance, Fortinet preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in network management including LAN/WLAN/MAN/WAN experience and designing/implementing network infrastructure solutions in Windows environments.
  • Working knowledge of copper and fiber cabling, Electricity/Power, Firewalls, TCP/IP, Routing, Switching, wireless, VLANs, and SSL VPNs.
  • Extensive experience with DNS and DHCP; knowledge of QoS, SSL, IPSEC, IPv4, IPv6, OSI Model, and NTP.
  • Documentation and design work with Visio or other tools.
  • Knowledge of network security systems, intrusion detection systems, and data backup.
  • Understanding of cloud technologies including Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Azure.
  • Able to lift and carry 40 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate, in detail, system planning both verbally and in written format.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
