These networks typically include an intranet, extranet, local area network (LAN), and wide area network (WAN). The role involves designing and planning network systems, specifically focusing on both LAN and WAN configurations. The engineer will design, configure, and deploy LAN and WAN network connections, hardware, software, and communication links and services. Additionally, the position requires performing disaster recovery operations and data backups when necessary. The Network Engineer will provide specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture, offering specific, detailed information for technology selection, implementation, and deployment. This includes tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements. Conducting testing of network systems is also a critical part of the role, along with maintaining technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, switches, firewalls, proxies, and load balancing. The engineer will prepare appropriate network documentation, including operational instructions, and evaluate and report on new network technologies to enhance the capabilities of the network. Knowledge of network topography for cloud integration may be required, as well as the implementation of applications for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication to enhance the efficiency and security of the organization’s operations.
