About the position

The Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute plays a crucial role in providing individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers throughout the cancer care continuum. This position utilizes oncology-specific clinical knowledge to help patients navigate healthcare system barriers, ensuring timely access to quality health and psychosocial care. The ONN is responsible for various nursing aspects, including patient education, symptom management, and follow-up care, while floating between multiple satellite locations within the DFCI network.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes nursing care responsibilities for a defined group of patients, including assessment, education, coordination, and documentation.
  • Facilitates individualized care considering functional status, cultural considerations, health literacy, and psychosocial needs.
  • Provides a welcoming approach to new DFCI patients and promotes a positive professional image.
  • Supports patient transitions from diagnosis and active treatment into survivorship or end-of-life care.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients, families, and providers to optimize outcomes.
  • Advocates for patient-centered care and shared decision-making.
  • Provides psychosocial support and facilitates referrals for patients and families.
  • Contributes to the development and evaluation of the ONN program within the healthcare system.
  • Participates in day-to-day operations of the satellite program and tracks metrics and outcomes.
  • Functions as the primary nursing contact for care delivered within the satellite setting.
  • Monitors patient safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Maintains evidence-based clinical practice consistent with nursing policies and standards.
  • Promotes a culture of inclusion and sensitivity to diverse populations.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a registered Nurse in Massachusetts or New Hampshire.
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing strongly preferred; if associate degree, must complete BSN within 4 years.
  • Minimum of 1-year recent experience as an RN, preferably in Ambulatory or oncology settings.
  • Professional nursing certification preferred (e.g., OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN-BC).
  • AHA BLS required (AHA ACLS accepted as minimum requirement).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and independent decision-making.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in oncology nursing or ambulatory care settings.
  • Professional nursing certification (OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN-BC).
