About the position

The Network Operations Engineer I position at Boston University is a vital role within the Information Services & Technology (IS&T) community, specifically within the Infrastructure Operations team. The primary responsibility of the Network Operations Engineer I will be the day-to-day management and delivery of communications infrastructure, which encompasses data, video, and voice services across the university's campuses and satellite locations. In this role, the engineer will utilize their technical expertise and collaborative skills to ensure the effective delivery and maintenance of the university's communications infrastructure and services. This includes proposing and developing new processes and procedures related to configuration changes, operational sustainment, and monitoring of network performance. The engineer will be expected to manage service requests and respond to incidents within defined service level agreements (SLAs), ensuring the highest levels of network performance, reliability, scalability, affordability, and security. Additionally, maintaining comprehensive documentation that is complete, updated, and archived as necessary is a critical aspect of this position. Collaboration with the Service Desk and other internal departments will be essential to ensure seamless operations and support for the university's technological needs. Responsibilities

  • Manage network infrastructure at BU campuses and satellite locations.
  • Complete service requests and respond to incidents within defined SLAs.
  • Ensure the highest level of network performance, including reliability, scalability, affordability, and security.
  • Ensure documentation is complete, updated, and archived as necessary.
  • Work closely with Service Desk and other internal departments.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of advanced knowledge in routing & switching technology.
  • Experience with BGP, OSPF, TACACS, RADIUS, DNS, DHCP, IPv6, load balancers, firewalls.
  • Proficiency in Cisco wired, wireless, datacenter technologies, VoIP, CLI, F5, Palo Alto, VMware, Linux, MSOS.
  • Familiarity with Zenoss, Rancid, Cacti, MRTG, ServiceNow.
  • Strong network troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of ITIL practices.
  • Strong technical, analytical, organizational, and collaborative skills; ability to work under pressure and manage concurrent challenges effectively.
  • CCNA or equivalent experience.
  • Willingness to participate in 7x24 on-call support rotation.
