About the position

The Network Operations Engineer II position at Boston University is a critical role within the Information Services & Technology (IS&T) community, focusing on the management and delivery of communications infrastructure across data, video, and voice services. This role emphasizes technical expertise and collaboration to ensure optimal network performance and reliability while also proposing new processes for operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Manage network infrastructure at BU campuses and satellite locations.
  • Complete service requests and respond to incidents within defined SLAs.
  • Help ensure the highest level of network performance, including reliability, scalability, affordability, and security.
  • Ensure documentation is complete, updated, and archived as necessary.
  • Work closely with Service Desk and other internal departments.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of advanced knowledge in routing & switching technology.
  • Experience with BGP, OSPF, TACACS, RADIUS, DNS, DHCP, IPv6, load balancers, and firewalls.
  • Proficiency in Cisco wired, wireless, datacenter technologies, VoIP, and CLI.
  • Familiarity with F5, Palo Alto, VMware, Linux, and MSOS.
  • Experience with Zenoss, Rancid, Cacti, MRTG, and ServiceNow.
  • Strong network troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of ITIL practices.
  • Strong technical, analytical, organizational, and collaborative skills; ability to work under pressure and manage concurrent challenges effectively.
  • CCNA or equivalent experience.
  • Willingness to participate in 7x24 on-call support rotation.
