About the position

The Network Operations Engineer II position at Boston University is a critical role within the Information Services & Technology (IS&T) department, specifically in the Network Engineering team. The primary responsibility of the Network Operations Engineer II is to manage the day-to-day delivery of communications infrastructure, which encompasses data, video, and voice services across the university's campuses and satellite locations. This role requires a blend of technical expertise and collaborative skills to ensure the effective delivery and maintenance of these essential services. In this position, the engineer will be tasked with managing the network infrastructure, responding to service requests, and addressing incidents within defined service level agreements (SLAs). A key focus will be on maintaining the highest levels of network performance, which includes ensuring reliability, scalability, affordability, and security of the network systems. The engineer will also be responsible for ensuring that all documentation related to network operations is complete, updated, and archived as necessary. Collaboration with the Service Desk and other internal departments is essential to facilitate smooth operations and effective communication. The role also involves proposing and developing new processes and procedures related to configuration changes, operational sustainment, and monitoring of the network infrastructure. This proactive approach is vital for continuous improvement and adaptation to the evolving technological landscape. The Network Operations Engineer II will participate in a 7x24 on-call support rotation, ensuring that the network remains operational and responsive to the needs of the university community.

Responsibilities

  • Manage network infrastructure at BU campuses and satellite locations.
  • Complete service requests and respond to incidents within defined SLAs.
  • Help ensure the highest level of network performance, including reliability, scalability, affordability, and security.
  • Ensure documentation is complete, updated, and archived as necessary.
  • Work closely with Service Desk and other internal departments.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of routing & switching technology (3-5 years of experience).
  • Experience with BGP, OSPF, TACACS, RADIUS, DNS, DHCP, IPv6, Load balancers, Firewalls.
  • Proficiency in Cisco Wired, Wireless, Datacenter Technologies, VoIP, CLI.
  • Familiarity with F5, Palo Alto, VMware, Linux, MSOS.
  • Experience with Zenoss, Rancid, Cacti, MRTG, ServiceNow.
  • Strong network troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of ITIL practices.
  • Strong technical, analytical, organizational, and collaborative skills; ability to work under pressure and manage concurrent challenges effectively.
  • CCNA or equivalent experience.
