About the position

Meta is seeking a forward-thinking Network Operations Engineer to join our Edge and Network Services (ENS) team in Prineville, OR. The ideal candidate will possess subject matter expertise in hyperscale data center structured cabling, fiber connectivity solutions, and IP networking. This role requires collaboration at a strategic level with internal business teams, external vendors, and network design/engineering teams to develop strategies for integrating new technologies and enhancing support for existing technologies across our operational fleet. A key objective is to understand the technical drivers for the business, organize strategies to ensure operational supportability, and represent ENS across stakeholder groups to achieve critical project goals. The ENS team is dedicated to improving the operational efficiency and reliability of one of the most dynamic and fast-paced networks in the world. The right candidate will thrive in a fast-moving organization and will be adept at identifying operational pain points to implement process enhancements and automation solutions. They will enjoy diagnosing root causes in complex systems and quickly acquiring new domain expertise and technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Drive work investigating complex technical and process issues on a global scale during major incidents/site events (SEVs) on edge, caching, and network infrastructure.
  • Identify problems and implement effective change within security & business continuity issues affecting the network, edge, and infrastructure at Meta.
  • Drive operational excellence by overseeing a large contingent workforce responsible for delivering roadmapped projects and executing recurring operational activities.
  • Work closely with internal customers to address their needs and influence future iterations of data center and network designs for seamless integration of new infrastructure.
  • Set team goals and collaborate globally with cross-functional teams to deliver predictable business outcomes across global sites.
  • Design and implement processes that identify and manage data and asset protection risks, as well as operations continuity issues across the network.
  • Ensure operational process, procedure, and policy documentation is effectively managed and that data required to support operations is complete and accurate.
  • Analyze operational events to identify new automation opportunities and help achieve the vision of fully remediating Tier-1 faults in the network by software.
  • Drive quality into the metrics reported to focus on areas that provide the best return on investment, including escalation issues, fault/event trends, and vendor performance failures.
  • Provide clear and effective communication around personal and team goals, progress, outcomes, and lessons learned.

Requirements

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of work experience operating, deploying, and designing large-scale network, optical, and/or physical layer infrastructure.
  • 3+ years of network operations experience supporting large-scale service provider, datacenter, and/or enterprise network infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging effectively with hardware vendors, service providers, and colocation facility vendors globally, translating performance issues into technical engineering requirements.
  • Experience analyzing tactical situations, troubleshooting, root causing systems and tools, and problem solving via tasks or larger cross-functional projects.
  • Intermediate subject matter expertise in telecommunication networks, including terrestrial optical transport networks, structured cabling, and optical testing principles.
  • Expertise with physical infrastructure design, including rack elevations, cable types, and facility infrastructure.
  • Experience with network hardware platforms and architectures including Ciena, Infinera, Nokia, Arista, and Cisco WDM Equipment.
  • Working knowledge of internet networking technologies (TCP/IP, routing, switching) and optical transport technologies.
  • Experience providing technical guidance to external vendors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience partnering with infrastructure engineers in varied environments such as colocation facilities, cable landing stations, or owned data centers.
  • Direct leadership experience in global Network Operations environments managing SLAs and continuous improvement against metrics at scale.
  • General knowledge of purchasing processes, negotiating, and end-to-end supplier management.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based systems and experience with scripting and automation (Bash, Python, Perl).
  • 2+ years of programming experience in at least one language such as Python/C++/Go.
  • Project management experience.
  • Advanced executive leadership communications experience.
