About the position

Meta is seeking a forward-thinking Network Operations Engineer to join our Edge and Network Services (ENS) Operations team. This role is pivotal in supporting the delivery of field services and requires a candidate with a diverse skill set across various technical domains, including systems, tooling/automation, security, optical/telecom infrastructure, hyperscale data center structured cabling, and IP networking. The ideal candidate will work strategically with internal business teams, external vendors, and cross-functional teams to develop strategies for integrating new technologies while enhancing support for existing technologies across our operational fleet. A key objective of this position is to understand the technical drivers for the business, organize strategies to ensure operational supportability, and represent ENS across stakeholder groups to ensure the successful execution of critical projects. The Network Operations Engineer will play a crucial role in improving the operational efficiency and reliability of one of the most dynamic and fast-paced networks globally. The right candidate will thrive in a fast-moving organization and will be adept at identifying operational pain points to implement process enhancements and automation solutions. This position requires a passion for identifying root causes in complex systems and a willingness to quickly learn new domain expertise and technologies. In this role, you will lead highly cross-functional infrastructure projects and programs, covering a wide range of areas including data center operations, network infrastructure, logistics, compliance, and software system engineering. You will also be responsible for managing interactions with third-party hardware, colocation, telecom carriers, and managed service partners, ensuring that operational processes and documentation are effectively managed and accurate. Participation in the global team's Tier IV+ on-call rotation is expected, with the goal of improving processes and tooling to prevent future escalations. Additionally, you will provide expert leadership in root cause analysis and corrective actions to resolve operational issues across various infrastructure architectures and vendor performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead highly cross-functional infrastructure projects/programs/functions in a matrix organization covering a range of areas (data center, network, infrastructure, logistics, supply chain, compliance, legal, and software system engineering).
  • Identify opportunities to drive improvements to existing tools & processes and provide feedback on new policies, practices, procedures to scale with the rapid expansion of the Meta platform and customer base.
  • Represent organization and manage interaction with third party hardware, colocation, telecom carrier, and managed service partners.
  • Lead business risk management alignment and change management at the organizational level for edge infrastructure use cases.
  • Ensure relevant operational process, procedure, and policy documentation is effectively managed and the data required to support operations is complete and accurate in systems.
  • Participate in the global team's Tier IV+ on-call rotation with the goal of routing issues as needed and understanding how processes or tooling might be improved, skills can be developed, or automation can be implemented to prevent the need to escalate similar issues in the future.
  • Provide expert root cause and corrective action leadership to resolve any and all operational issues found across infrastructure architectures, hardware platforms, and vendor performance.
  • Drive the team to analyze operational events to identify new automation opportunities and help achieve the vision of all Tier-1 faults in the network being fully remediated by software.
  • Provide hands-on management and leadership during analysis, goal definition, design, solution development, plan socialization, testing, implementation, and post-implementation phases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of work experience operating, deploying, and/or designing large-scale network, optical, and/or physical layer infrastructure.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining cross-functional relationships that help teams, stakeholders, and partners define and achieve goals.
  • Expert experience in organizational and digital transformation initiatives at both the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Ability to analyze tactical situations, troubleshoot, root cause systems and tools, and problem solve via tasks or larger cross-functional projects.
  • Intermediate subject matter expertise in IP Networking/Routing & Switching (TCP/IP, IPv4/v6, BGP, ISIS, OSPF, and/or MPLS): network certifications, such as CCNA/CCNP, JNCIA/JNCIS, RHCSA or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in providing technical guidance to external vendors and identifying key metrics/measures to evaluate success and validate the business impact of the program.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with purchasing, negotiating and end-to-end supplier management, such as managing global RFPs and contract negotiations.
  • Direct leadership experience with global Network Operations Center (NOC) environments and managing SLAs and continuous improvement against metrics at scale.
