About the position

Northwestern Mutual is seeking a passionate and experienced Network Security Engineer to enhance their cybersecurity team. This role focuses on safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring compliance with industry standards through the design, assessment, and implementation of network security solutions. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in an agile environment, addressing complex security challenges and mentoring junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Design, assess, and implement network security solutions.
  • Consult on enterprise network security projects to ensure best practices are followed.
  • Monitor for network redesigns that will impact security capabilities.
  • Actively monitor, assess, and recommend initiatives based on emerging threats.
  • Guide and advise network security engineering teams on security best practices.
  • Represent the CISO's department to align network security initiatives with enterprise strategies.
  • Mentor other staff members to ensure consistency and quality of deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and methodologies supporting network security capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in cloud and on-prem technologies (Unix/Linux/Windows systems administration, AWS and/or Azure networking, firewalls).
  • 5+ years of experience in development, infrastructure, or cybersecurity.
  • Understanding of risk management frameworks such as NIST.
  • Experience with CICD pipelines for automating application and infrastructure code deployments.
  • Familiarity with workload orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity capabilities including data security, security engineering, identity & access management, incident response, logging & monitoring, and penetration testing.
  • Relevant certifications from GIAC, ISC(2), or other recognized cybersecurity organizations.
  • Experience with development and scripting languages such as Python or PowerShell.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mentoring junior staff members.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies.
  • Knowledge of secure cloud architectures.
