About The Position

The Network Specialist position at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is a full-time role within the Office of Information Technology. This position is responsible for providing tier 3 support for network connectivity issues, troubleshooting campus fiber optics and copper ethernet, and ensuring the smooth operation of the university's network infrastructure. The role emphasizes collaboration with various departments and vendors to maintain and enhance network services, contributing to the overall academic and operational excellence of the university.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an IT related field or equivalent year-for-year experience.
  • Experience in the installation and configuration of network equipment and network cable plants in an enterprise environment.
  • Certification in networking through Cisco, HPE Aruba, Juniper, or another large network vendor (CCNA, Network+, or equivalent).
  • Clear understanding and application of TCP/IP network troubleshooting, using testing equipment, and using packet capture software.
  • Fundamentals of local area networks and network design.
  • Experience with Cisco IOS switch and router commands and knowledge of scripting language or programming languages.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced certification in network technology is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tier 3 support for wired incidents and problems escalated by the OIT Services Team.
  • Communicate with the Service Desk about active outages, problems, and known network issues.
  • Open and follow-up on support cases with vendors when necessary.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues on a TCP/IP network.
  • Install copper and fiber optic data lines.
  • Terminate copper ethernet and fiber optic cables, clean and polish fiber optic ends, and install connectors.
  • Perform OTDR tests and interpret results.
  • Document physical network including fiber paths, organize and label data closets.
  • Coordinate with network cable installation vendors.
  • Attend construction meetings and walk-throughs to represent the Office of Information Technology on technology build-out when necessary.
  • Backup Cisco network switch configurations.
  • Install and upgrade switches and switch software.
  • Configure and maintain network monitoring software.
