About the position

At Cisco Meraki, our Network Support Engineer Interns play a crucial role within the Support team, engaging in hands-on troubleshooting across the entire Meraki product line, which includes wireless access points, security appliances, switches, and the Systems Manager application. This internship is designed to provide a steep learning curve in a fun and challenging environment, allowing interns to develop a deeper understanding of networking, enhance their problem-solving skills, and master customer support techniques that will benefit them throughout their careers. Interns are expected to be proactive, smart, and passionate individuals who are willing to take on various tasks and contribute to the team's success. The position is full-time and based in Chicago, with applications accepted until further notice. Interns will participate in structured classroom workshops focused on core CCNA preparation, guided by a Meraki instructor. They will engage in lab assignments using tools like Packet Tracer, NetAcad labs, and Meraki troubleshooting labs to build foundational knowledge in networking and troubleshooting. Additionally, interns will assist with lab testing for Meraki products, identify issues for the Meraki Knowledge Base, and communicate effectively with third parties, including partners and customers, regarding technical issues and customer service inquiries. Collaboration with other Support team members is essential to resolve network outages, misconfigurations, and complex networking issues, as well as analyzing packet captures using Wireshark.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in structured classroom workshops specific to core CCNA preparation administered by a Meraki instructor.
  • Work through lab assignments via Packet Tracer, NetAcad labs, and Meraki troubleshooting labs to learn networking and troubleshooting foundations.
  • Assist with lab testing work as needed for Meraki products.
  • Identify issues suitable for entry in the Meraki Knowledge Base.
  • Effectively communicate with third parties regarding technical issues and customer service inquiries, both orally and in writing.
  • Collaborate with other Support team members to fix network outages, misconfigurations, and complex networking issues.
  • Read and analyze packet capture using Wireshark.

Requirements

  • Pursuing an associate's degree or a Junior/Senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, networking, systems administration, or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Hardworking and interested in exploring the Networking field.
  • Passionate about assisting and problem-solving with customers.
  • Able to think strategically and critically about solutions, willing to learn and find solutions outside of current knowledge areas.
  • Efficient communicator and problem-solver.
  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals, including the functions of and differences among the link, network, transport, and application layers.
  • Outstanding account management, follow-through, and problem-solving skills.
  • Resourcefulness and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Nice-to-haves

  • Networking certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CWNA, etc.
  • Experience supporting or testing LANs, VLANs, WLANs, VPNs, NAT devices, and/or DHCP servers.
  • Comprehension of networking protocols, including TCP, STP, ARP, Ethernet, OSPF, etc.
  • Preferred experiences within helpdesk, technical call center, desktop support, or past networking experiences.
