About the position

BCforward is currently seeking a highly motivated Network / System Engineer IV for an opportunity in Richmond, VA. This position is a contract role with a hybrid work model, expected to last for 12 months. The Network / System Engineer IV will be responsible for matching current technology with the current needs of the organization. This includes evaluating and installing software, hardware, and other types of support equipment into a workable network that supports a variety of functions. The individual in this role will have fundamental knowledge of Systems Engineering infrastructure and will perform high-level systems support. The responsibilities of the Network / System Engineer IV include providing problem determination and resolution, installing and updating newly developed software to assigned systems, and managing the operating system and associated subsystems. The engineer will provide system-level support of multi-user operating systems, hardware, and software tools, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of these systems. They will also be responsible for identifying alternatives for optimizing computer resources, investigating and analyzing information, and drawing conclusions based on their findings. Additionally, the engineer will research, plan, install, configure, troubleshoot, maintain, and upgrade operating systems and hardware/software interfaces with the operating system. Collaboration with other technical staff, such as networking teams, is essential to ensure connectivity and compatibility between systems. The engineer will also write and maintain system documentation, manage capacity planning, disaster recovery, and security as necessary. This role requires extensive experience with operating systems, network protocols, systems programming, and configurations, as well as hubs, switches, and routers. The engineer will participate in the development and implementation of monitoring solutions aligned with the business information flows and systems architecture, recommending new technologies that enhance current systems and support overall corporate goals.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and install software, hardware, and support equipment into a workable network.
  • Provide problem determination and resolution for systems issues.
  • Install and update newly developed software to assigned systems.
  • Manage the operating system and associated subsystems.
  • Provide system-level support of multi-user operating systems, hardware, and software tools.
  • Identify alternatives for optimizing computer resources.
  • Investigate and analyze information to draw conclusions.
  • Research, plan, install, configure, troubleshoot, maintain, and upgrade operating systems.
  • Research, plan, install, configure, troubleshoot, maintain, and upgrade hardware and software interfaces with the operating system.
  • Collaborate with technical staff to ensure connectivity and compatibility between systems.
  • Write and maintain system documentation.
  • Manage capacity planning, disaster recovery, and security as necessary.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of monitoring solutions aligned with business processes.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience engineering solutions with IBM Tivoli Netcool Suite.
  • Experience with Netcool Omnibus - Message bus probe/gateway.
  • Netcool Omnibus probe rule writing including regular expression.
  • Experience with Apache Kafka Ecosystem including messaging and log aggregation.
  • Fault tolerant and high availability design experience.
  • Unix background.
  • Understanding of ITRS Geneos / Kafka integration.
  • Netcool Impact Policy writing experience is a plus.
  • XML experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Dynatrace, Splunk Enterprise including deployment and instrumentation.
  • Proven experience with supporting monitoring tools such as Tivoli, Microfocus BPM, Sitescope, Dynatrace, Catchpoint.
  • Knowledge of OS (Windows/Unix) based infrastructure services, processing, monitoring, shell scripts, etc.
  • Proven experience in programming languages (Java and/or .NET).
  • Proven experience in application/network performance and availability monitoring.
  • Proven experience in N-Tier Architecture supporting a multitude of products (Webserver, Middleware, Database, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ITIL functions and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to network and influence across multiple levels.
  • Self-motivated, hands-on, driven individual with strong leadership skills.
  • Strategic thinker who can link business context to technical reality.

  • Experience working in a large, multi-data center enterprise environment.
