About the position

The Network Systems Analyst position at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center involves monitoring and troubleshooting communications-related problems for NASA's Mission Network (NASCOM). The role requires the analyst to gather data, analyze network issues, and prepare project synopses to recommend solutions. The analyst will also orient user personnel on new procedures and conduct special projects related to data standardization. This position is critical for supporting NASA missions and requires working in a 24/7 network operation center.

Responsibilities

  • Use a variety of network management and diagnostic tools for monitoring and troubleshooting communications-related problems for NASA's Mission Network (NASCOM).
  • Monitor and assist with maintenance of Cisco Routers & Switches and Juniper Routers.
  • Operate NASA unique hardware items as required.
  • Support the network's operations and day-to-day activities in support of NASA missions.
  • Work directly with other NASA centers and customers to resolve real-time network and dataflow problems.
  • Participate in testing and implementation of new network services.
  • Support non-standard shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the NASCOM Mission Alternate Operating Facility (MAOF).
  • Pass both a written and practical certification test associated with the operations of the Mission Network within 180 days of hire.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP technology.
  • Knowledge of IP Addressing and subnet masking.
  • Excellent writing and oral communications skills.
  • Hands-on experience with standard industry products such as Cisco, Juniper, and Ciena.
  • Effective communicator able to coordinate network and customer issues with other technical sections.
  • Ability to multi-task and respond quickly to real-time dataflow issues.
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours/shifts.
  • Pleasant personality.
  • Knowledge of Network Monitoring tools, e.g., NNMi, Spectrum, MRTG, CACTI.
  • Experience in supporting Wide Area Networking connectivity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of normal trouble ticket processes.
  • Hands-on experience with data analyzers, network probes, and other network diagnostic and performance measurement devices.
  • Experience in performing traceroutes and executing ping tests.
  • Experience in WAN protocols such as SONET and MPLS.
  • Experience working with Commercial Carrier service providers, e.g., AT&T, Verizon.
  • Knowledgeable of transmission principles including T1, T3, DS-3 & OC-3/48.
  • Knowledge of serial interfaces including RS232, V.35, and RS 449 preferred.
  • Knowledge of Linux.
