About the position

The City of Chandler Information Technology Department is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as a Network and Telecommunications Principal Engineer. This full-time position is scheduled to work 5 days a week, 8 hours per day, and is exempt from overtime. The ideal candidate will be responsible for analyzing, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, security appliances, and monitoring/reporting systems. This role requires a high level of expertise and leadership in managing complex network environments and developing innovative network architectures. The successful candidate will be passionate about customer service, teamwork, collaboration, and innovation, and will play a key role in ensuring the city's network infrastructure is robust, secure, and efficient. As a Network Principal Engineer, you will lead network projects and collaborate with team members to provide exceptional service and support. You will ensure that network security and performance standards are met, troubleshoot and resolve advanced network issues promptly, and provide expert consultation on network-related projects. Additionally, you will develop and implement innovative network policies, procedures, standards, and architectures, oversee the architecture and design of the city's network infrastructure, and conduct regular network performance assessments to optimize configurations. Mentoring and training junior network engineers will also be a critical part of your role, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team. Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, install, configure, maintain, and repair network infrastructure.
  • Manage and maintain routers, switches, firewalls, security appliances, and monitoring/reporting systems.
  • Lead network projects and collaborate with team members to provide exceptional service and support.
  • Ensure network security and performance standards are met.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced network issues promptly.
  • Provide expert consultation on network-related projects and guide the team on best practices.
  • Develop and implement innovative network policies, procedures, standards, and architectures.
  • Oversee the architecture and design of the city's network infrastructure, ensuring scalability and future-proofing.
  • Conduct regular network performance assessments and optimize configurations.
  • Implement and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Mentor and train junior network engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Stay current with emerging network technologies and industry trends, incorporating them into the city's technology roadmap.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers to ensure high-quality delivery of network services.
  • Document network configurations, changes, and maintenance activities thoroughly.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and best practices in network security and data protection.
  • Design and implement robust network security measures to protect against threats and vulnerabilities.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 7 years of experience in network design and administration, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role.
  • A valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional network certifications (e.g., CCNP, JNCIP, CISSP, CISM, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience with advanced network technologies and solutions.
  • Experience with cloud network technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Strong understanding of network security principles and practices.
  • Proven ability to manage and lead complex network projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
