About the position

The Associate Editor at Running Press will support a Senior Editor and Licensing Manager in acquiring and editing titles for the adult market, focusing on licensing, pop culture, and entertainment. This role involves developing strong relationships with various stakeholders, brainstorming project ideas, and guiding manuscripts through the editorial process. The position is based in Philadelphia and follows a hybrid work model.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with licensors, literary agents, authors, artists, and other creative communities to acquire books.
  • Brainstorm and develop projects based on pop culture brands and lifestyle trends.
  • Edit and develop manuscripts and guide projects through all stages of the editorial process.
  • Participate in brainstorming meetings and share ideas for books, stationery, and related products.
  • Work with licensors, authors, and agents to craft concepts and bring projects through all stages of approval.
  • Serve as a public voice for projects, from initial acquisition meetings through sales conference presentations.
  • Interact professionally with licensors, freelancers, authors, and their literary agents, and collaborate with internal departments.
  • Draft descriptive copy for sales and marketing departments, as well as consumer-facing materials.
  • Create materials for pitching to licensors, including creative concept decks and financial proposals.
  • Research trends, formats, and book sales to aid in acquisition and development.

Requirements

  • 3+ years editorial experience in book, magazine, or digital publishing.
  • Strong interest in publishing, licensing, books, stationery, and related products.
  • Imagination, creativity, and original thinking with an open-minded approach to visual and popular culture.
  • Ability to identify entertainment properties, fan communities, market trends, and formats for compelling books and products.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Highly organized, capable of multi-tasking, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels of seniority.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and independently.
  • Comfort with teamwork and coordinating projects with designers, writers/authors, and freelancers.
  • Familiarity with Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, and understanding of line editing and style guides.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in licensing or the arts or entertainment fields.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style or other style guides.
