New College Grad, PhD Data Scientist (Econometrics)

About the position

At Western Digital, we are seeking a PhD Data Scientist to transform how we respond to market dynamics, optimize supply, cost, and pricing, and enhance our financial forecasting methods. This role is strategically positioned within the organization of the CIO, focusing on accelerating Analytics solutions at scale across the Enterprise to rapidly capture business value. The solutions target key business metrics such as reducing manufacturing costs, improving capital efficiency, reducing time-to-market for new products, enhancing operational efficiency and logistics, and improving customer experience. The successful candidate will collaborate with key stakeholders in Product Marketing, Sales, Finance, and Supply Chain to develop cutting-edge analytics solutions that drive significant impact on revenue, profitability, and shareholder value. The role involves developing probabilistic demand forecasting models, scenario planning, simulations for risk management, financial forecasting, pricing optimization, and data analysis. The candidate will also work closely with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and develop data-driven solutions, while continuously learning and innovating in the field of data science.

Responsibilities

• Develop probabilistic models for demand forecasting with associated probabilities.
• Update demand forecasts dynamically using Bayesian principles.
• Create multiple scenarios based on future market conditions and demand trends.
• Utilize Monte Carlo simulations to quantify and minimize risks on inventory and profitability.
• Build financial econometric models for sales and revenue projections.
• Apply advanced analytics for pricing strategies and optimization.
• Acquire, cleanse, and transform large datasets for actionable insights.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify challenges and develop solutions.
• Stay updated with trends in econometrics, advanced statistics, and data science.

Requirements

• PhD in Economics & Data Science, Advanced Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or related discipline.
• Research experience in forecasting, risk management, and optimization problems.
• Deep expertise in advanced statistical methods and simulations.
• Proficiency in SQL, Hadoop, Spark, and NoSQL databases.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R for data analysis.
• Prior experience or aptitude in Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques.
• Ability to learn new tools in data visualization and cloud platforms.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with data visualization tools like Power BI or Spotfire.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Oracle Cloud, AWS, or GCP.
