About the position

At HNTB, we are looking for an Entry Level Electrical Engineer to join our team in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. This position is integral to our signal systems team, which is responsible for the design and implementation of control systems that ensure the safe movement of railway traffic. As part of a company with over a century of experience in delivering complex infrastructure projects, you will have the opportunity to contribute to significant projects that impact communities across the country. In this role, you will assist in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, and specifications for various rail projects. You will work closely with project teams to perform research, development, calculations, and design, applying engineering techniques and procedures to projects of varying sizes and complexities. Your technical knowledge will be leveraged to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs, and you will develop both conceptual and detailed designs to support project execution using current drawing and technical tools. The HNTB Signal team is a leader in the field, providing services for transportation agencies nationwide. Your work will involve laying out block designs based on train performance criteria, developing circuits for signal lighting and switch machines, and designing interlockings and highway grade crossing warning systems in compliance with state and federal regulations. Responsibilities

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.
  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline.
  • Be a key member of the production staff using CAD (AutoCAD or Microstation), Excel spreadsheets and specialist software in order to support the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Be adaptable, innovative, and pro-active with a flexible work approach and coordinate with supervisors starting new tasks, developing design, and completing and closing out work tasks.
  • Coordinate well with other engineering disciplines within the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Knowledgeable with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Knowledgeable with Microsoft suite of tools e.g. Powerpoint, MS Office, Excel, Word.
  • Programming experience preferred but not required.
