About the position

The HCA Nurse Residency Program at Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a comprehensive year-long initiative designed to support new graduate nurses as they transition from academic settings to professional practice. This program emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing participants to develop essential clinical and critical thinking skills in a supportive environment. As a Resident I Graduate Nurse, you will be part of a collaborative community that includes nurse educators, experienced nurses, and fellow residents, all dedicated to fostering your growth and development in the nursing field. You will be joining the 25 Bed Neuro Trauma Unit, which specializes in the care of patients with stroke, neurological, neurosurgical, and trauma-related injuries. This unit is characterized by a strong team dynamic, with support from LPNs, RNs, and PCTs, creating an inclusive atmosphere that promotes both professional and personal connections. The program also offers a Career Pathway initiative, providing opportunities for advancement into various specialty areas such as ICU, ED, Stroke Coordinator, Cath Lab, and EP Lab. The residency program includes advanced clinical training, monthly educational sessions, preceptorship training, and hands-on simulations to measure and evaluate your skills. You will also receive mentoring from experienced nurse leaders and work collaboratively on evidence-based practice projects, ensuring that you are well-prepared to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. As part of your role, you will coordinate and deliver care in accordance with departmental requirements and nursing standards. You will assess patient conditions, perform medical procedures, administer medications, and educate patients and their families about treatment plans and medical conditions. Responsibilities

  • Assess patient condition during admission and during each shift as scheduled, identifying and reporting any changes in patient status.
  • Perform procedures, monitoring, or other functions as ordered by the medical provider(s). Document the administration of care in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Perform the administration of prescribed medications. Monitor patient for therapeutic response. Notify provider and intervene as appropriate in the event of an unintended response to medication.
  • Perform exceptional care by responding promptly to patient requests. Strive to anticipate patient needs and resolve them proactively.
  • Teach patients, families and caregivers about patient medical condition, patient status, treatment plan, medications and possible side effects, and follow-up measures. Translate complex medical terminology to ensure complete understanding.

Requirements

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) obtained within 30 days of employment
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) obtained within 1 year of employment
  • Other Certifications may be required during employment
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse License or Graduate Nurse in the State
  • No previous experience needed
  • Some travel may be needed for training.
