About the position
The Karner Blue Butterfly Steward position with the Student Conservation Association involves aiding in habitat restoration and management for the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly in New York's Saratoga-Capital Region. The role includes working at two parks, leading conservation efforts, conducting habitat restoration projects, and engaging in public outreach to promote environmental stewardship and education.
Responsibilities
- Monitor populations of Karner blues, frosted elfins, and other rare species.
- Manage habitat and host plant quality.
- Assist with habitat restoration projects.
- Provide outreach to area visitors and improve compliance with protective measures.
- Assist with various restoration projects under the supervision of the Restoration Ecologist at Moreau Lake State Park.
- Conduct vegetation monitoring and wildlife surveys.
- Work with volunteers on restoration activities.
- Document monitoring for spring and summer butterfly broods.
- Conduct habitat monitoring in butterfly management areas.
- Assist with invasive species control and native plant restoration.
Requirements
- CPR Certification
- Public speaking skills
- Experience with GPS and GIS
- Knowledge in Entomology and Botany
- Experience in Natural Resource Management
- Field survey experience with vegetation and insect monitoring
Nice-to-haves
- Willingness to become a Pesticide Apprentice for invasive species control
- Willingness to assist with prescribed fire operations
- Experience in education and outreach
