About the position

The Newborn Hearing Screener I is an entry-level position responsible for conducting hearing screenings for newborns in well baby and NICU nurseries at birthing facilities in the Greater Phoenix area. The role involves evaluating infants, performing automated hearing tests, and providing information to parents about hearing loss and necessary follow-up care. This position requires flexibility in scheduling, as it is a PRN role with potential for future scheduled days.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and prioritize infants to be screened prior to discharge from hospital based on established protocol.
  • Perform automated hearing screening tests.
  • Explain the purpose of newborn hearing screening (NBHS) to parents and answer any questions.
  • Refer children to audiology as appropriate and handle challenging cases or questions.
  • Prep patient and environment for screening and identify any risk factors for hearing loss.
  • Interpret and record results accurately and inform parents of the results of the hearing screening.
  • Document screening test results in medical records, state database, and newborn hearing screening log as indicated by screening protocol.
  • Follow established infection control procedures and utilize appropriate baby handling skills.
  • Recognize problems with screening equipment, troubleshoot as necessary, and report any recurrent issues to the program supervisor.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects to improve delivery of newborn hearing screens and help infants achieve screening by 1 month of age, diagnostic evaluations by 3 months, and intervention by 6 months if needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to provide care at Phoenix and Gilbert locations.
  • Knowledge of newborn care and hearing screening protocols.
  • Strong communication skills to explain procedures to parents and answer questions.
  • Ability to document and record results accurately.
