About the position

The Times of San Diego, an award-winning digital nonprofit, is seeking a News Editor to oversee the website during specific shifts. This role is crucial in ensuring the timely posting and editing of articles, as well as managing the home page. The News Editor will be responsible for selecting, editing, and posting articles sourced from wire services and news releases. Collaboration is key in this position, as the editor will work closely with the editor, reporting staff, interns, and freelancers to assign and refine articles. The role also involves managing story placement on the home page, utilizing news judgment and analytics to determine the most impactful stories to highlight. Additionally, the News Editor will create and distribute email newsletters and alerts, update third-party platforms and social media channels, and maintain a budget of key upcoming news events for coverage. The ideal candidate will possess a deep knowledge of local journalism and a passion for its advancement, believing in its potential as a positive force in communities and democracy. This position requires exceptional news judgment and ethics, familiarity with digital tools such as WordPress and analytics programs, and strong writing skills, particularly in crafting headlines and social media content. The News Editor will also be expected to foster an inclusive work environment that values diversity and empowers team members, celebrating wins and promoting a culture of collaboration and support.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the editor-in-charge of the Times of San Diego website during a shift
  • Choose, edit, and post articles from wire services and news releases
  • Collaborate with the editor, reporting staff, interns, and freelancers to assign and edit articles
  • Manage story placement on the home page based on news judgement and analytics
  • Create and send email newsletters and alerts
  • Update third-party platforms and social media, including Apple News and Google News Showcase
  • Maintain a budget of key upcoming news events for coverage
  • Create an inclusive work environment that values diversity, fosters belonging, and empowers others

Requirements

  • 10 years of experience in journalism, with at least five (5) years in a website editing role
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English, or equivalent work experience
  • Exceptional news judgment and ethics
  • Familiarity with WordPress, photo-editing software, and analytics programs such as Parse.ly
  • Experience writing and editing in a fast-paced, deadline news environment
  • Strong writing skills, including headlines and social media
  • Collaboration skills, especially in remote work settings
