About the position

The Times Union has an immediate opening for a News Editor who will play a crucial role in shaping our daily news product, including a Sunday print edition that features some of our most impactful stories. This position requires a dynamic individual who can seamlessly shift between long-term projects that may take weeks to develop and fast-breaking news that necessitates the quick deployment of reporters and photographers. Collaboration with our digital team is essential to ensure that our stories reach a wide audience. As a News Editor, you will directly manage a team of 3-5 reporters, guiding them to produce impactful journalism week after week. Your responsibilities will include line editing and preparing content for publication, ensuring that the work of your team and other newsroom reporters meets our high standards. You will collaborate with fellow news editors to create a robust daily report while also nurturing larger projects that are in development. Your role will involve engaging with diverse communities to uncover stories that might otherwise remain untold, helping journalists develop a network of sources, and utilizing public transparency laws to enhance our watchdog journalism efforts. Staying ahead of the competition is a key aspect of this role, requiring a proactive approach to news coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage a team of 3-5 reporters to produce impactful journalism, week after week.
  • Line edit and prepare for publication content created by your team and other newsroom reporters, daily.
  • Collaborate with a team of news editors to fill out a robust daily report even as bigger projects simmer.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom, particularly with our digital team, to maximize the reach of your team's story.
  • Be responsive to the needs of a vibrant set of communities to bring out stories that would otherwise remain untold.
  • Help our journalists develop a network of sources across those communities.
  • Work the levers of public transparency law to better serve watchdog journalism.
  • Stay ahead of the competition.

Requirements

  • A college graduate with a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or another relevant subject; or with equivalent and relevant on-the-job experience.
  • A seasoned daily news journalist with a minimum of 10 years experience in a field that can include 5 years experience as a manager and editor.
  • Someone who can self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
  • Proficient with basic Windows programs including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Someone with an appreciation of Slack, Zoom and other remote-friendly tools.
  • A self-starter with great communication and line-editing skills who does not crumble under deadline pressure.
  • Someone who is not timid about jumping into the fray to report a story when needed.
  • Someone with an innate curiosity and healthy skepticism.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community journalism or engagement with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with digital news platforms and social media strategies.
