About the position

The NH Senate Minority Office is seeking a full-time Communications Director to advise Democrat Senators on communication strategies related to legislative processes, policy content, and media engagement. This role involves crafting messaging, managing press releases, and developing district-specific strategies to support the Democratic agenda throughout the legislative session.

Responsibilities

  • Craft Caucus messaging, press releases, and social media presence in adherence to the Democratic agenda.
  • Track Senate Calendar for key committee hearings and floor debates.
  • Create roundtable and earned media opportunities.
  • Develop district-specific messaging strategies.
  • Support legislative liaisons with constituent management and communications.
  • Assist Minority Leader in coordinating Senate floor procedure with Majority Leader.
  • Prepare floor remarks for Democrat Senators and assist with Senate floor procedures as needed.
  • Introduce legislation on behalf of Democrat Senate sponsors.
  • Advise Democrat Senators on legislation as it affects their districts and complements the caucus policy agenda.
  • Create briefing papers and talking points as needed on pending legislation.
  • Build and maintain relations with Senators, Representatives, staff, and stakeholders to facilitate consideration of bills from the LSR stage through final disposition.
  • Work closely with Minority Caucus Director on policy, speeches, and press releases to help Senate Minority Leadership develop and communicate their agenda.
  • Communicate with Democrat Senators about session days, including possible floor amendments and parliamentary procedure.
  • Read legislation prior to public hearings scheduled in the Senate and prior to consideration on the Senate floor.
  • Track all Senate bills, key House bills, and Governor's actions to apprise Senate Minority leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience in crafting policy, tracking legislation, and preparing background materials on legislative issues.
  • Significant working knowledge of key pieces of legislation.
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize and execute simultaneous tasks on deadline, including last minute changes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Discretion and judgement in representing the New Hampshire Senate at all times.
