About the position

The NIAR CNC Programmer at Wichita State University is responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing CNC programs to produce high-quality precision machined metal parts. This role requires a strong background in programming and operating Modig CNC machines, particularly the Modig RigiMill, and involves collaboration with internal and external customers to ensure compliance with design specifications and efficiency in production.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares numerical control (NC) programs and related documentation for producing precision parts on CNC machines.
  • Creates consistent and reliable methods for optimum efficiency of material removal and part compliance.
  • Selects suitable cutting tools for specific parts and sets up jobs with required fixtures and tooling.
  • Follows the progress of parts through inspection and processing cycles for discrepancies and optimizations.
  • Collaborates with internal and external customers regarding delivery, blueprint questions, lean ideas, and cost reductions.
  • Identifies improvement opportunities while adhering to schedule and budget constraints.
  • Provides support for machine operations and training on safe work habits as needed.
  • Develops programs from model-based definition using assigned CAM software: MasterCam/CATIA.
  • Develops a tooling list for each program and works with CNC machine operators to optimize or modify programs as required.
  • Plans, creates, verifies, and revises machine control data and documentation for numerically controlled machines.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent by hire date.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience; every 30 hours of related college coursework and/or technical training can substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Provide numerical control, machining, and programming technical expertise to support 4/5 axis machining and turning NC programs, experienced with Modig RIGIMILL MG.
  • Develop programs from model-based definition using assigned CAM software: MasterCam/CATIA.
  • Utilize Vericut validation software for NC program.
  • Experience creating and updating technical documents, reports, and standards.
  • Analyze blueprints, engineering models, and electronic controls to support NC programming.
  • Experience and working knowledge of manufacturing process, assembly, and fabrication process.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Extensive understanding of product engineering concepts and applications.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members, managers, and engineers.
  • Ability to work directly with shop floor operators for tryout and process improvement.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of design for manufacturing concepts.
  • Hands-on experience in the shop/manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of CAD Modeling (2D, 3D).
  • Proficiency in MS Office products.
