About the position

The Nondestructive Evaluation Sciences Branch Intern position at Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. (AMA) offers a part-time opportunity for students or recent graduates in Electrical or Computer Engineering. The intern will support the development of an Ultrasonic Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Scanner at NASA Langley Research Center during Spring 2025. This role involves hands-on experience in hardware integration, software development, and data analysis, providing a unique chance to apply technical skills in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with data acquisition and motion control hardware using manufacturer-provided libraries.
  • Contribute to the development of the scanner's software framework using Python, focusing on efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
  • Collaborate on the design, development, and testing phases of the Ultrasonic NDT Scanner, ensuring it meets project requirements.
  • Apply data analysis techniques to provide system feedback and visualize data captured by the scanner, enhancing its diagnostic capabilities.
  • Maintain detailed records of development progress, challenges, and solutions, and prepare periodic reports for the project team and supervisors.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer engineering, Electrical engineering, or related fields.
  • Preference given to candidates with an additional background or strong interest in Data Science or Nondestructive Testing.
  • Technical writing experience with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in Python, including advanced concepts such as object-oriented programming and user interface development.
  • Familiarity with motion control system components and experience integrating libraries for hardware control and data acquisition.
  • Proficiency in data analysis libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, and SciPy; experience with user interface data visualization tools like Matplotlib and Tkinter.
  • Understanding of A-scans, B-scans, and C-scans and their applications.
  • Familiarity with applying Fourier transforms to ultrasonic signals for frequency domain analysis.
  • Proficiency with GIT for version control.
