About the position

The Northeast Fisheries Data Debriefer will support the collection and review of fishery data as mandated by various fishery management plans. This role involves working closely with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center to ensure data accuracy and completeness, assisting with observer training, and maintaining communication with observers and data managers. The position requires a strong background in marine biology or fisheries management, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to work in diverse environments.

Responsibilities

  • Review/edit electronic data uploads and raw data logs for completeness and accuracy within established timelines.
  • Contact observers to verify inconsistencies and solve data recording problems as needed.
  • Schedule observer debriefings as necessary and complete evaluations of each observer's work on a per trip basis.
  • Submit weekly reports on editing progress to the lead data debriefer.
  • Keep the lead data debriefer, data processing lead, and data managers informed of important data recording issues.
  • Assist with routine audits and checks on trip data prior to loading to the observer database.
  • Assist with preparations for Observer Trainings including exercises, homework assignments, workshops, quizzes, exams, and presentations.
  • Carry the after-hours phone for observer assistance on a rotating schedule.
  • Deploy on shadow trips, trip trainer trips, and priority trips as needed.
  • Inspect, maintain, and distribute observer gear as needed.
  • Assist with evaluating and transitioning to new data collection programs.
  • Assist with additional special projects such as fish ID and sampling projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in fisheries science or management.
  • B.S. degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries Biology/Management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in fisheries science and management.
  • General knowledge of analytical techniques.
  • Previous experience as a Fisheries observer is preferred.
  • Familiarity with UNIX based computers and network systems.
  • Ability to perform at-sea observer related duties.
  • Mentoring training or experience.
  • Conflict Resolution training or experience.
  • Program planning and management in a team environment.
  • Developing performance metrics and milestones.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in GIS, website development, SAS, and other statistical packages.
  • Experience working with marine fisheries information programs or other science-based programs.
  • Ability to represent NEFOP and NOAA programs in conversations with industry participants and stakeholders.
