About the position

KMGH, the E.W. Scripps Company ABC affiliate in Denver, Colorado, is seeking a Northern Colorado Multimedia Journalist. This position is not entry-level; it is designed for a journalist who is dedicated to covering the unique stories of Larimer and Weld counties. The successful candidate will be someone who is committed to building relationships within these communities and is passionate about telling impactful stories through both written and visual media. The role requires a journalist who can work independently while also collaborating with colleagues in the Denver newsroom for training and support. During breaking news events, the journalist will have the opportunity to work alongside a photojournalist, enhancing the storytelling process. In this role, the journalist will be responsible for receiving assignments and evaluating news leads to develop compelling story ideas. They will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and research, ensuring that the stories told are accurate and engaging. The journalist will organize material, determine the angle of the story, and write it according to the prescribed editorial style and format standards. Additionally, they will shoot video and still photos to illustrate their stories, edit multimedia content for various platforms, and appear on television for packaged reports. The journalist will also be expected to go live from the site of events and assist news producers in preparing newscasts, as well as collaborate with online staff to prepare multimedia stories on tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignments or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on TV in packaged reports.
  • Go live from the site of events or mobile broadcast unit.
  • Work cooperatively with a photographer assigned to the story if one is assigned.
  • Assist news producer in preparing newscasts.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.
  • Report, write, capture quality visual content, edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline, such as Internet and digital channels.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism or related degree or equivalent years of experience.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP-style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
