About the position

The Network Communications Analyst position at Northrop Grumman is part of the Military Internship Program (DoD SkillBridge), designed for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience. This role involves supporting the maintenance and operation of local area and virtual private networks, assisting in network planning and installation, and ensuring compliance with security policies. The position offers on-the-job training and aims to prepare interns for potential full-time opportunities within the company.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the maintenance of smooth operation of local area, worldwide, and virtual private networks (VPN).
  • Assist in the planning, evaluation, and coordination of installation and/or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication network(s).
  • Maintain technical expertise in all areas of networks and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc.
  • Apply STIGs or other Hardening Policies to network devices and maintain their compliance status on a quarterly basis.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to the preparation of appropriate network documentation, including SOPs and Network Diagrams.
  • Provide regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems.
  • Coordinate third-party maintenance for network equipment.
  • Assist in the design of network or portion of network to include selection of hardware and software packages.
  • Collaborate with other team members in the planning, management, and implementation of network designs in support of customer requirements.
  • Support network teams in project designs to clarify project requirements and provide design solutions, in accordance with standards.
  • Perform troubleshooting analysis of network infrastructure and associated systems.
  • Document network hardware and software technology components.
  • Install and configure routers, switches, and firewalls (Cisco/Palo Alto).
  • Implement and troubleshoot LAN technologies such as VLANs, trunking (port tagging), spanning-tree, and other protocols.
  • Provide support to internal customers and troubleshoot network problems.
  • Liaise with senior level Network Administrators and Engineers in determining technical objectives of assignments.
  • Assist with the implementation and troubleshooting of WAN technologies such as EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, and telco circuits (T1, T3, OC3, etc.).
  • Interface regularly with customers and manage customer installation timelines and deliverables to help facilitate successful deployments.
  • Assist with the configuration of HAIPE/TACLANE and other military COMSEC/CRYPTO equipment and the writing of procedures.
  • Use network analysis tools (i.e. WireShark, SolarWinds, Opnet, etc.) to troubleshoot networking issues.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and 4 years of experience, or Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience; a High School diploma or equivalent with 6 years of additional education/experience may be considered in lieu of a completed degree.
  • Must have a DoD 8570 IAT Level II baseline certification (example: Security+ CE); maintaining the required certification will be a condition of continued employment.
  • Candidates must have a current DoD Secret level security clearance (at a minimum), to include a closed investigation date completed within the last 6 years, or must be enrolled in the DoD Continuous Evaluation Program (CEP).
  • Must have work experience maintaining LAN & WAN based networks, managing routing protocols on any size environment, and experience with Cisco hardware (routers, switches, and firewalls).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Visio, Project, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 40 pounds is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering or other relevant field of study.
  • Cisco CCNA-Security certification and 6 years of experience with network design, analysis, and administration of Cisco routers, switches, hubs, and Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Previous experience troubleshooting network procedures and best practices; experience with network challenges associated with systems integration, including COTS integration, capacity analysis, and system architecture design.
  • Familiarity with network management applications (ie. Splunk, Panorama, and/or Cisco ISE).
  • Experience with managing routing protocols on LAN environments.
