About the position
The Nucor Technical Academy is a specialized training program aimed at equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to become proficient maintenance electricians. This program is designed for candidates who possess a high school diploma or GED and spans a duration of 27 months. The curriculum is a blend of educational instruction, cultural integration, and practical training, drawing from various existing training programs within Nucor. Participants will engage in both classroom learning and hands-on training, ensuring they are well-prepared to enter the workforce as Maintenance Electricians upon completion of the program. The training will commence with academic coursework conducted online, followed by limited on-the-job training at the sponsoring Nucor division during the first summer and initial fall. Candidates will be required to relocate to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, before the start of the spring semester, where they will remain for five consecutive semesters. During their time in Tuscaloosa, candidates will undertake technical courses and participate in on-the-job training at Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa. Additionally, there will be opportunities for candidates to return to their sponsoring divisions between semesters until they graduate. Safety is paramount in all roles at Nucor, and candidates must demonstrate their ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards consistently throughout their training and future employment.
Responsibilities
- Complete academic coursework online and participate in limited on-the-job training at the sponsoring Nucor division.
- Relocate to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for five continuous semesters of technical courses and hands-on training.
- Work closely with experienced Nucor Maintenance Team Members on hands-on assignments.
- Demonstrate the ability to uphold safety policies and procedures at all times.
Requirements
- Current high school transcript with a preferred GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- ACT, SAT, or Accuplacer scores to be uploaded with the application or provided before the interview.
- A one-page essay explaining the candidate's work history, activities, or interests that make them a suitable candidate for the training program, including career or educational goals.
- Completion of a separate application to Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
