About the position

The School of Human Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking an Assistant Instructor to also serve as the Assistant Coordinator for the Motorcycle Rider Program. This is a full-time, 12-month, 100% term non-tenure track appointment that is contingent upon receiving grant funding. The position is based on the Motorcycle Rider Program grant year, and the final candidate's salary and rank will be determined based on their experience and background, subject to approval by the granting agency. In this role, the Assistant Coordinator will assist in teaching instructor preparation courses, including PH346 - Motorcycle Instructor Training. The courses will cover various topics such as driver education, safety principles, adult learning principles, motor skills principles, brain-based learning, attitudinal development, judgment, facilitation, and communication. The position also involves supervising and evaluating instructors and course aides, with instruction taking place in both classroom and field settings. The Assistant Coordinator will be responsible for teaching students in driver instruction and overseeing the teaching of students at various levels of experience and skill in motorcycle operation, safety processes, and strategies. Additionally, the role includes assisting in overall grant management and reporting to the Illinois Department of Transportation, managing the day-to-day operations of the grant, equipping training sites, procuring motorcycles and equipment, and maintaining the motorcycles and other training equipment. The Assistant Coordinator will also develop and distribute course schedules, prepare reports for course evaluation, document costs for reimbursement, and maintain the program's website. The position requires irregular work hours and travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in teaching instructor preparation courses including PH346 - MOTORCYCLE INSTRUCTOR TRAINING.
  • Teach students in driver (rider) instruction and oversee the teaching of students at various levels of experience and skill.
  • Assist in overall grant management and reporting to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the grant.
  • Equip training sites and assist in procuring motorcycles and equipment.
  • Manage and maintain motorcycles and other training equipment.
  • Develop and distribute course schedules.
  • Prepare reports for course evaluation and document costs for reimbursement.
  • Maintain the program's website.
  • Work irregular hours and travel as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree by date of hire.
  • Motorcycle safety teaching experience, qualifications, and knowledge.
  • Valid class M (State of Illinois - motorcycle) driver's license or its equivalent from another state and a safe riding and driving record with no possibility of suspension by date of hire.
  • Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach Certification by date of hire.
  • Possess clear and proficient oral skills.
  • Must be first aid certified by date of hire.
  • In-depth understanding of the SIU grant project and Illinois Cycle Rider Safety Training Program.
  • Technical understanding of motorcycle mechanics and ability to troubleshoot motorcycle mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience with maintaining fleet motorcycles.
  • Valid class A CDL (Combination Vehicle) driver's license or its equivalent from another state or must acquire it within 18 months of hire.
  • Must meet all requirements listed in Motorcycle Rider Program Grant documents.
