About the position

The Nuclear Engineer position within the Office of Science at the Department of Energy focuses on planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating research programs related to fusion energy technologies, safety research, and future facilities studies. The role involves developing tools for fusion energy, enhancing safety measures, and collaborating with various divisions to ensure the effective operation of fusion facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop tools for fusion energy and enhance safety measures.
  • Analyze future fusion facilities and their operational requirements.
  • Develop research programs for fusion energy facilities to ensure world-leading research.
  • Build a safety database and tools for safe energy production.
  • Manage system studies for future facilities in the Fusion Energy Sciences program.
  • Collaborate with the Fusion Energy Science Facilities and Project Division to provide scientific direction for new facilities.
  • Identify enabling technology needs for safe and effective operation of fusion facilities.
  • Prepare Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFO) and Funding Announcements, review project proposals, and provide funding recommendations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education and experience in engineering.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 for GS-13 applicants, or GS-13 for GS-14 applicants, in nuclear technologies and engineering facilities.
  • Professional registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in project management within nuclear engineering.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance in engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of fusion energy technologies and research methodologies.
